Did I say we were through with the supermarket? I misspoke.

If you study shopping for a living, there are certain advantages to working in an office full of normally functioning adults: everybody’s an expert. We all spend our days measuring and analyzing how people behave in retail environments, and yet we are also those same people, out buying groceries just like everybody else. It brings a practical dimension to our scientific understanding. It also means that every time we enter a supermarket, we see it through a microscope, if you know what I mean. As a result, we all have strong, incisive views.

I convened a few of my coworkers one afternoon to discuss possible futures of the supermarket. When I read the transcript of our conversation, it felt as though I were reading a play—an odd play, to be sure, on a rather arcane subject, but a drama, or maybe a comedy, all the same. And so, I present, with no further introduction, the Envirosell Players in a production of:
